Intumescent paint offers the added protective layer to the steel, this is an integral and vital part of passive fire protection. When exposed to extreme temperatures the paint will intumesce (expand) to protect the steel structure, this extends the time a building can withstand the heat/fire and reduces the damage to structures, giving occupants time to evacuate and firefighters more time to get the fire under control.
